Reily is a Lab/Whippet mix. i love my dog!! I've had her since Aug/Sept of 09. She was in the street at my job, very skinny (more skinny then they already are), every bone was sticking out. So I took her in. She is now 4. Wow... where do i start??! LOL I call her my "special dog" as you refer to your Bailey as "dumb" lol i call her my retard dog... dumb isnt the word. She is the craziest dog i ever owned or met. She LOVES to run, yes they run very fast and chase anything that moves. She loves biting other dogs and honestly, putting their heads in her mouth. She barks at everything. I have been working with her ever since i got her. She knows sit, stand up, lay down, off, give paw, leave it, roll over, stay but does not and will not "drop it". She also knows what "this way" means, she will stop whatever way shes going and turn in the other direction. She knows what "wait" means. When my boyfriend says "go with mommy" she runs with me where ever im going. Shes a jumper and a biter. For the life of me i can NOT break her of that. She is very good on a leash. For the most part she can go outside without a leash to go to the bathroom and she will come back in. BUT if she sees an animal... theres nothing i can do to get her to stop running after it. She is VERY hyper!! She follows me everywhere i go. Shes very dominate over every dog she is around. I have moved a few times while i've had her and i WILL NOT get rid of her because i know people will not have the patience with her that she needs. You MUST have patience when dealing with these dogs. And i mean A LOT of patience.
I have a black lab/whippet mix (or "whip-ra-dor") and even as a puppy, she is the best dog I have ever owned. Sounds like the dog above may have more of the labrador personality traits than whippet. In my experience with labs, they tend to be very high strung or hyper for the first several years and then settle down nicely into perfect family dogs. Our Minnie happens to carry more of the whippet traits. She is extremely mellow and easy going. She barks very rarely, loves children and is very gentle with them. She is a little leery of strangers but warms up to them pretty quickly. However, she does not make a very good guard dog since she doesn't really bark. She has an extremely high chase instinct and chases after our cats regularly but has never hurt them. She is very smart and has been very easy to train (I think this comes from the lab). In about two weeks time, she learned sit, stay, down, shake, leave it, and is clicker trained as well. She is extremely loyal to me as I am her primary caregiver but loves everyone. I frequently take her to our local dog parks and the girl could run all day long. She LOVES to run and play with other dogs. We plan to start lure coursing with her this spring. She was about 7 months old when we adopted her from a local shelter and has been a complete joy in this time she's been with us. With any mixed breed, I think it's a bit of a toss up what traits will dominate, but I would definitely take a gamble on this mix! :) When it's time to add to our family, we'll be looking for the same breed.
