Embden Goose

Embden Goose

Other name(s):
 Bremen Goose;
L'oie d'Emden; Emder Gans

Scientific name: Anser anser domesticus

Country / Place of origin: Germany

History: The Embden Goose is a large domestic breed which was developed in the northern Netherlands or in Germany. The Embden is the tallest breed of goose, and has a massive body and long swan-like neck. They are fast growers and will quickly reach about 9 kg (20 lb) for the Goose, and 14 kg (30 lb) for the Gander. Because of their size, the Embden are now the most common goose used for commercial meat production. The first Embden geese were imported to America from Germany in 1820, and were initially called "Bremens" after their port of departure.
