Black Dorper
Black Dorper sheep are becoming more popular in Canada, as they provide a choice in the commercial meat industry to raising wool sheep. The stature, fat rump and broad chest of the Dorper provide a quality carcas for the meat industry with out any of the draw-backs of raising wool sheep. They can lamb in Cold winter months provided they have shelter from the wind. They do not require a heated barn as do the wool breeds. Lambs should jump up and nurse with in a few minutes of birth.

Crossing the Dorper breed with other breeds of the sheding hair breeds, provides a vigorous lamb and crossbred ewes perform well, with the added size of the Dorper and keeping the mother traits of the Katahdins you get a very good comercial production animal, that is easy to handle and keep.
Because they are not growing wool, Dorpers require 1/3 less feed than comparable sized wool breeds. Also the Dorpers do not have any lanolin, and therefor never have a mutton taste and 3 year old sheep taste comparable to a lean "spring" lamb in blind taste tests. They do not have the strong flavor of the wool breeds and are considered to be a mild-flavored meat.
