Comedians of the equine world
Mules aren't for everyone.  You need to have a sense of humor and good patience in order to enjoy and get along well with a mule.  They are the comedians of the equine world.   Prior to having mules I had horses for many years.   I loved the horses and did a lot of trail and mountain riding/packing with them.  Then I got my first mule... and I've never looked back.   Mules are more like dogs in their personalities.   They are also extremely smart, much more so than a horse, and because of that you have to be able to "out-smart" them at times in order to accomplish what you want with them.   They also have such a good sense of humor that they will test your patience at times... and losing patience with a mule won't get you anywhere.   But, once you become a mules best friend, there is nothing like it.  They will go anywhere and do just about anything for you.   I usually have around 6-10 mules at any one time and use them for riding and packing.   They are the love of my life.   But, if you have never had a mule before, I strongly suggest that you find someone who has had a mule/mules for awhile to help you learn how to work with them so that it's a positive experience for both you and the mule.  They are different from horses, and sometimes you have to go about things a little differently than you do with a horse.   But, in the end you will have the most solid mount you could ever want and one that you can trust with your life no matter where you ride.

Thanks so much. I've heard other people mention their sense of humor. I wonder if any studies have been done on "humor" and "playfulness" in animals in relationship to their intelligence? We all seem to make the connection - just think of the smarter non-human species like chimps and dolphins. Pigs...always said to be smart but I haven't heard people talk about their sense of humor?

As I get older I am thinking more and more about possibly a mule. I followed one on my very large horse that has a good walk but her could not keep up. Their walking speed is amazing! I have heard that they are different than horses, but don't know how they are different, except for sound and looks! I work with many mule owners to get them a great fitting saddle for their mules with my bare tree fitting method. We carry a nice selection of mule saddles. http://www.horsetack-supplies.com
