ALL DOGS ARE PERFECT
know your dog breeds- get a good all breed dog book from the library and go catalog shopping.  once you have decided what you want a dog for, (companionship, hunting partner, work buddy, laphound, babysitter, alarm system, or inforcer.)
with that list of breeds go to the animal shelter, speak with a kennel person, they know these dogs better than anyone and maybe give you a history.  explain what you want a dog to do with you and they will help you decide which of their charges offer you the best match for your wants.  Don't run in a pick a cute puppy (all puppies are cute and it only last so long,  long about they start on the second pair of shoes.) this is a long term commitment,  this life will be totally dependent on you for health care, feeding, excercise, companionship, training, love and attention.  (even kids grow up and learn to cook and clean for themselves, if they are trained well)
10-15 years worth of committment.
