Amazing dogs, challenging as pets
Hurley was my second of this breed. Both barked a lot and were aloof. Grooming is quite a task. Their coats are amazing and are oil free but they get a very heavy undercoat. He likes to guard the yard, even against crows. This is the only breed of dog that has a keen awareness of overhead threats such as hawks, crows, hot air balloons...Really, they can find anything to bark at. Still they have stolen a spot in my heart. They like to have a job. Mine loves to think he is helping me up the stairs. Very sweet. Does not like strangers much. Can take a long time to warm up to others. He is also afraid of ceiling fans...again with the strange overhead awareness. They are considered a giant breed and do get very large. They can have problems such as hip dysplasia and cancer. Lost one to bone cancer. Short lives overall.
