Common Musk Turtle

Common Musk Turtle

Species group:
 Mud and Musk Turtles

Other name: Stinkpot Turtle

Scientific name: Sternotherus odoratus

Range/Habitat: The Common Musk Turtle is an aquatic turtle which is native to much of eastern North America. They are found in shallow waters in streams and ponds and feed on aquatic invertebrates like crayfish.

Because of their small size, the Common Musk Turtle is a common pet. Both captive bred, and wild-caught specimens are kept.

In some regions the Common Musk Turtle is a protected species. In the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario, for example, it is illegal to collect or posses a Common Musk Turtle without a permit. It is highly recommended that you check on state and local regulations before acquiring a Common Musk Turtle as a pet.
