95% of the world's animal species are invertebrates, and insect
collecting for display purposes has historically been an important
scientific pursuit. The keeping of live insects though is a relatively
new hobby, and is often sparked by school projects with butterflies,
silk worms and ant farms.
For the hobbyist, the variety of
collectible live invertebrates is practically limitless. From spiders
and scorpions to mollusks and insects - there's an invert for every
interest and budget.
(Because some species post risks if released
into the wild, be sure to first check with your local laws and
regulations on the keeping of insects and exotic pets.)
