Breeders

Breeders can own stallions and mares, or they can own mares and choose stallions from other farms to sire their foals. When you see the term “breeder” or “bred by” in reference to a specific horse, it typically refers to the owner of the mare when the foal was born.

Today, there are two general ways to "cover" or breed the mare.

Live cover
With live cover, the mare is brought to the stallion's residence and is covered "live" in the breeding shed. She may also be turned out in a pasture with the stallion for several days to breed naturally (pasture bred).

Artificial Insemination (AI)
With AI, the mare is inseminated by a veterinarian or an equine reproduction manager, using either fresh, cooled or frozen semen.
