Breed group: Draft horses
History
Details: The American Cream Draft Horse is the only draft breed that was developed in the United States. It is a rare draft breed that is only found in the cream color. The breed was founded around a cream colored draft mare (in 1911) of unknown lineage in Iowa. Many of her foals exhibited her unique coloring, which created local interest and eventually led to the establishment of the breed. In the 1930’s, C.T. Rierson of Iowa began keeping detailed records of his breeding program, which consisted of a mixture of cream-colored horses of unknown origin, Belgians, Shires and Percherons. He named the breed the American Cream, and in 1944, the American Cream Draft Horse Association was formed but with the decreasing usage of draft horses on farms, the breed failed to flourish and by the 1970’s, the association was defunct and the breed had all but disappeared. In 1982, a concerned handful of breeders created a new association under the same name, and the breed has grown to approximately 300 total horses throughout the country.
