Species group: Betta Fishes
Other name: Siamese Fighting Fish; Betta
Scientific name: Betta splendens
Country / place of origin: Thailand
Appearance
Details: The Betta Fish (also commonly known as the Siamese Fighting Fish) is one of the most popular species of freshwater aquarium fish, especially for beginning aquarists. Part of their appeal is their graceful and colorful appearance. Betta Fish come in many exotic color varieties including magenta, orange, yellow (rare), white, and emerald green. Unfortunately, Betta Fish are often placed in a small bowl, which is not a suitable habitat for these gorgeous fish (or for any other fish!). For a single Siamese Fighting Fish, a minimum tank size of 3 gallons capacity is recommended, provided that it is kept in a warm room. To lengthen lifespan and improve the disposition of the fish, a 10-gallon tank would be appropriate. Male Betta Fish are also notoriously aggressive, and two male B. splendens can never to be housed in the same tank as they will fight to the death.
