Diet: In the wild, Cockatiels are known to eat a wide variety of seeds including those of acacias and agricultural fields. However as a pet, and as with most parrots, seed diets available do not provide enough nutrition and leads to serious and debilitating health problems. A healthy daily diet for Cockatiels consists of a formulated pellet, fresh vegetables and fruits, and a limited amount of a seed mix. They may also be fed cooked food from time to time like whole grain pasta, brown rice, beans, and chicken. They greatly enjoy fresh greens such as sprouts, herbs, and kale.

Housing: As a minimum size the cage should be at least 24”w x 18”d x 24”h for a singly housed bird. To prevent your parrot from getting zinc or lead toxicity make sure the cage is powder coated. They need several perches of various sizes and textures for healthy feet, wooden round dowel perches should not be used as these can cause pressure sores. Cockatiels are active and enjoy playing with toys. Having 3-5 toys in their cage is ideal. They will also enjoy hanging out with their human flock on a play gym and getting fresh air in an outdoor cage or aviary.

Natural history

Cockatiels are found throughout Australia. They are highly adaptable and their population is thriving with the increase in agricultural crops. They tend to prefer open habitats such as open wooded areas, farmlands, and grasslands. Nomadic and migratory in some regions, they are found in a variety of climates where temperatures are from 40 degrees Fahrenheit to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Behavior/ Temperament

Often said to be a great bird for the novice parrot owner, Cockatiels are playful at heart and enjoy human companionship. They tend to be upbeat, friendly, and easy to train. These little birds are excellent at mimicking their favorite sounds such as the bleep of a car alarm, a ringing telephone, or your favorite show tune.
